Art in The Glen

Art in the Glen, a Kirkmichael based art initiative, has started up again recently. The initial idea, conceived five years ago, was the brainchild of local resident Jenny Walton. Originally from Kent, she is a retired computer professional “from the days when you could walk round inside them”, and has always been interested in art.

Jenny told Comment: “I’ve been going to evening classes for more than 20 years and I just thought it would be nice to have something going on in the village.”

The group, which meets in the Session House on Tuesdays (2.00 – 4.00pm), is very informal and, Jenny continued: “I really just wanted to encourage people to come along and explore their artistic interests. I have wide experience of many different techniques and, although not a teacher officially, I can help people with their work. We’re also hoping to widen the catchment area for art enthusiasts, and everyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.”

Although some materials are provided by the Session House through grant-funding, participants are encouraged to bring their own and, with past funding, artists such as Frances Law and Luisa Ramazotti have been invited to give very popular classes.

Jenny added: “If we can secure funds, we’d very much like to do something like that again.” There is a £2.00 admission charge, which goes towards the running costs of the Session House, and there will be an exhibition in Kirkmichael Village Hall during the Summer Festival (2&3 July) at which exhibitors can sell their works. Jenny added: “We welcome exhibitors from all over the Highland Perthshire area and, if anyone would like their work to be included, they can contact me on 01250-881411.”
