09 August 2011

This year's exhibition closed after its 7th successful year having become something of a Mecca for collectors and art lovers who have high expectations of this Highland Perthshire showcase. Patrons were not disappointed with the array of innovative and traditional creative pieces on show this season. In addition, record sales of £24,000 were achieved.
The backbone of the Fortingall show is still provided by paintings and an excellent pool of work by Richard Alred, Keith Brockie, Morag Cummings, Bill King, Maryanne Ryves, Audrey Slorance, Sheena Stanbridge, Eric Timms and Zanna Wilson among others was on show. These were complemented by Kate West’s fabulous jewellery, Heather Cumming’s amazing metal sculptures, photography by both Jamie Grant and Martin Knight and the work of glass-artist Bonnie Maggio. Thus the quality of the show was ensured.
Fortingall Art began as a co-operative art group staging a small rural exhibition. It attracted attention from the beginning , with its unique setting and venue, the Arts and Crafts style Molteno Hall in Fortingall  and the standard of work which has remained consistently high.
This year the group was privileged to welcome Philip Archer, Principal of the Leith School of Art and former Head of Visual Art Scotland who opened the exhibition presenting the prizes for the competitions. Fortingall Art has always tried to encourage an input from children and young people. As well as the popular mini art competition, this year, entries were invited to a new three-minute film competition entitled ‘Elemental’.  Seventeen -year-old Euan Ivey from Perth won the £250 prize and his film was on permanent show during the exhibition.
Alison Donnan from Ayr, who was staying at the Fortingall Hotel with her 85 year old aunt, was the 1,000th visitor to the Exhibition. To mark this milestone Alison was given artists’ cards.
The ‘red spot’ tally of sales exceeded last year’s total by £3000.
The Fortingall Art exhibition committee is delighted by the response and the appreciation expressed by all who were privileged to see the very high standard of work on display this year.  It looks forward to staging it again in 2012.
