There’s going to be a film screening in the Birks Cinema, the first for more than 25 years. Working with the organisers of the Aberfeldy Film Festival The Birks will host the opening event, which includes a screening of ‘The Freedom Of Aberfeldy’ (a classic short local film from the Scottish Screen Archive) in the cinema. This will be at 7.30pm on Friday 12 November. The screening may not be in the comfy luxury and super-high-quality that the re-developed Birks cinema will eventually offer, but it’s still an exciting and historic event. And it’s another important step in the campaign to raise awareness of how good the new Birks will be for the area, as well as a chance to raise some funds. This will also be an opportunity to see the cinema in it’s current dramatic stripped-back state, before retiring to the warmth of the Locus Centre over the road to hear more about our campaign, enjoy some drinks and nibbles and get excited about the great range of events happening over the weekend in the Aberfeldy Film Festival. The Film Festival (organised by the Heartland Film Society) runs over the full weekend and includes: • films telling ‘rattling good yarns’ for all the family (showing in the unique surroundings of Castle Menzies) • showings and prize-giving for the Palme-Dewar short film competition • animation workshops for young people and adults (run by Red Kite Animation) • a great ceilidh in the castle, with the Loch Tay Steamers Tickets for the opening event are only £3 and are available (along with tickets for all the events in the Festival) from Tourist Information Centres in Aberfeldy, Dunkeld and Pitlochry.
