Top Awards for Malcolm and His Apprentice

Highland Perthshire-based engravers Malcolm Appleby and Callum Strong recently scored a hat trick and more at the Annual Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Awards by winning in all engraving categories.
In an impressive joint effort Malcolm and his apprentice took a clean sweep of 5 awards at this prestigious London event.
In the Engravers (Senior) category, Malcolm’s Phoenix Gun took the coveted Gold and the Council Special Award, his steel plate awarded the Silver award and a Commended award for a gold pendant. alt
Callum continues to show his immense talent and potential by scooping the Silver prize in the Engravers (Junior) category for his engraved fishing reel as well as obtaining the Commended award for the third year running for a silver disk engraved with a wasps’ nest.
17 year old Callum of Balnaguard has been an apprentice (previously while studying at Morrison’s Academy) to Malcolm Appleby for a number of years learning engraving and silversmithing. This was his third successful year at an impressively young age.
This was the 100th Competition, the first being in 1911.
The Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design Council was founded in 1908 and its aim is to organise and conduct its prestigious annual awards.

By investigating the current and future craftsmanship needs of the profession, the competition has become diverse and wide-ranging, embracing every aspect of craft and design activity currently being practiced in the industry. It is as to which there is no parallel in the UK.
All the work entered for this truly unique competition is judged by skilled and experienced practitioners drawn from their specialist field of expertise within the profession. These professionals endorse the high standards and objectives set by the council, thus validating the status and quality of these awards.
