Heartland FM has given an extended music show to a promising Aberfeldy youngster. Alex Lamond came to the community radio station on placement in June. As part of his training, he got the opportunity to record his ‘Personal Choice’. He put together a mix of dance music and impressed staff with his efforts enough to be offered a regular music slot. After just a few weeks, Alex’s Dance Hour has been renamed Alex’s Dance Hours, as from 15 July the show’s been extended to two hours, between 10pm and Midnight. The 14-year old Breadalbane Academy pupil (pictured) takes computing as one of his school options. With technology as one of his main interests, mixing dance music was an easy choice for him. He said it took a few attempts to get the hang of recording his first radio show, but he was pleased with what was possible after just a few sessions at Heartland. Alex’s programme goes out when most of his school friends should be in bed, but even so, many people have commented on his new venture. He’s enjoyed sharing his favourite sounds with a bigger audience. The mix of dance music, which includes Dubstep, Calvin Harris and Black-eyed Peas is recorded at the Heartland studio in Pitlochry. He likes finding new music, often discovered through YouTube, but he also includes older dance tunes and some Drum and Bass. Doing a regular show for Heartland FM will be a challenge for Alex, but he says he’s not fazed by the new commitment. He already helps The Breeze Project in Aberfeldy, a monthly term-time youth group. He hopes the experience at Heartland will help him towards a future DJ-ing with a bigger station.
